HOWTO: Record voice prompts through a headset on a T610 3

So I recently upgraded my mobile to a swanky new Ericsson T610, which is a fabulous piece of kit in so many ways. But one thing has bugged me from the start, I have a Jabra bluetooth headset (compulsory hands free here in the UK, or they chop off your hands etc..) which, coupled with the T610’s voice commands feature makes for a very neat in car solution; except that is when the car is moving.

You see, up till now I have been unable to find a way to record voice commands through the headset, having instead to use the phones built in microphone which results in a recording which sounds nothing like the headset - especially once you add the background noise generated by a car. Searching the Net yielded no useful information, other than a hint that it could be done - but not how. So after a bit of fiddling and experimentation I believe I’ve finally found the answer:

  • Firstly, the phone must be paired with the headset in normal mode, not advanced. You may or may not have to re-pair the phone before recording commands, I’ve had mixed results.
  • Once paired, go to Settings > Voice Control > Voice Dialing
  • When you’re at the Voice Dialing menu, hit the multi-function button on the headset. Then go into Edit Names and record your commands, the phone should now automtically use the bluetooth headset to record.
  • Finally, don’t forget to re-pair the headset in advanced mode if you want to use its extended features.

And thats it… seems so simple now eh? It’s a bit of a pain to have to re-pair each time I want to add a new command, but at least now the phone is usable while I’m on the move :)
